American Heavy Athletics is a training team primarily committed to enhancing performance in strength sports. This includes but is not limited to Weightlifting, Strongman, and Powerlifting.
Our athletes share a uniform programming template dedicated to their strength discipline, with assignments modified to address the individual’s needs.
The weekly programming requires a minimum of three days of strength based training, with two additional sessions of general purpose conditioning, adjusted based on the athlete’s development level and goals.
WHO IS THIS SYSTEM FOR?
Our programming is designed for anyone looking to focus on maximal strength development. American Heavy programming is not only for those athletes with the intent of pursuing competition in an organized strength sport, it can also be modified to assist athletes seeking to enhance their strength base to compliment other sports and athletics.
While some training assignments are performed at the athlete's discretion to allow for schedule flexibility, they are also strongly encouraged to attend weekly
coaching-led sessions. This allows for immediate feed back on the technical aspects of their movement and for our coaching staff to monitor the athlete's recovery and capacity.
BEHIND THE CURTAIN
American Heavy Athletics head coach, Dan Hartley, has been working with athletes for over ten years. Dan started his fitness career in the United States Navy, leading Seabee Battalion Physical Training programs. Towards the end of his naval career, Dan took interest in strength sports, specifically Weightlifting and Strongman. In the pursuit of more technical and programming knowledge, Dan sought out the most experienced athletes and coaches he could find to train with. This lead him to his first Weightlifting focused gym, Gayle Hatch's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This storied program has produced numerous national and international podiums for decades. Coach Hatch was award USA Weightlifting's National "Coach of the Year" in 2019. Training in this program would lead to Dan's love of the sport of Weightlifting and coaching athletes.
Upon moving back to North Carolina he began making a career out of his passion. Since then he's had the pleasure of coaching and training with athletes of numerous disciplines. Collegiate throwers and baseball players, top ranked powerlifters, weightlifters, and strongmen, elite crossfitters, and competitive kayakers, just to name a few. This wide variety of experiences gives Dan an uncommon depth of coaching knowledge, flexibility, and creativity. He combines this with his passion for the success of his athletes, regardless of their ability level and goals.
